For Immediate Release
The Libertarian Party of Madison County, Alabama (LPMCA), filed a resolution on June 22nd for Primary Participation in the 2024 Primary Election. Information on how to join the primary, as well as the rest of the LPMCA may be found at LPMCA.org. The LPMCA is fully prepared to support new candidates with a series of training courses, and registration is open now for anyone interested in learning how to run for office in Madison County as a Libertarian. More information about candidate training is available at lpmca.org/candidate-training or by contacting the LPMCA Candidate Coordinator, Anson Knowles at (256) 698-4933. General inquiries may also be forwarded to the Chairman of the LPMCA EC, Ollie Rhys, at LPMCAChairman@Gmail.com
Should someone desire to be a candidate in the 2024 primary for the LPMCA, the filing window begins on July 2nd of 2023, and ends November 11th of 2023. The offices on the County Commission, Probate Judge, and County Board of Education Districts 1 and 2 are open. Filing fees were set at one ounce of Silver, (in accordance with Article I, Section 10 of the US Constitution) or 50 Federal Reserve Notes, marking the first time where a Political Party in Alabama has charged fees in silver.
This follows Libertarian success in the 2022 General Election, with Alan Barksdale for Sheriff getting 23% and Laura Lane for Public Service Commission getting 26%. Due to achieving at least 20% in those races, the LPMCA was declared a major Political Party for elections in Madison County, which entitles Libertarians to participate in primary elections. Additionally, it removes the requirement for the LPMCA to petition for ballot access for any election for county office or below.
While this isn’t the first time the Libertarians have been a major party, this does mark the first time since the founding of the state party in 1975 that they are participating in a Primary election. The LPMCA expects Libertarian primary candidates to run a campaign of respect and honor, and requires candidates to certify that they will not “harm or discredit any candidate certified by the (LPMCA) in a public format, especially if that candidate is the current opponent or victor against me in a primary election.” Effectively banning negative campaigning in the Primary election.
